It's ok. Kind of simple and plain. The thick borders make it look kind of awkward and hard to read. I think it would look tons better if you open it up a little, spread out the content, etc. That particular "trendy" style doesn't work well with the type of borders you're using - it's too constraining.

I agree. There is way too much contrast/too much going on in such a small area. Everything is fighting for my attention which leads to confusion.

- Your BG is too dark. It makes your site brighter than it should be (which also plays a role in the contrast issue)

- The header.....eh....could be better.

- center the copyright. Its a distraction right aligned

- How many times do you need to repeat your URL?? If you really need the url in there, get rid of the one in the header (its hard to read anyway). The one below the nav is fine.
