It's a cool idea that could be pushed even further...don't stop!
What's the main focus of your site: the notebook or the photos, or both? A main page with snippets of the latest from each would be intriguing and catch my attention even more...you've got some interesting posts and thumbnails. Why not just combine the "news" and "notebook"?
I've seen the "torn paper" look so many times, as well as the (red) text overlay, and the site seems boxed in - maybe you could overlay everything on a fixed background crumpled sheet of loose leaf paper, with things written in a pencil-esque scrawl as the "heading" in the right hand corner. This could give it a cool dimensional look and there are a lot of directions to go with emulating a school assignment (holes on the side, ink splatters, animated doodles, etc.).
No matter what, I would add more graphical elements. Right now the blacks, whites, greys and hint of red aren't getting my attention.
Hope these were suggestions worthy of the infamous "bump".
