i have a PC on a cable modem running windows 2000. I want to hook up my Mac, too. - what hardware/software can you recommend?

I've heard Virtual PC does a good job. - I dont' even really care to hook the computers together, i.e. a network, just want to have the same cable connection.

any advice? thanks

Get a Linksys 4-port cable/dsl router and you shouldn't even need any additional software. The router will handle your log-in and you just run a line to each comp and you're good to go.

Yeah, I use a hardware router myself (a netgear model). Never have to log-in anything ever again. No pc needs to be on to maintain the connection either, which is my favorite part.

Do a price search on pricegrabber or pricewatch. Some sell as low as $30 for a cheap 4 port model, though a decent one can be bought for $50 if there aren't any good $30 sales going on.

Or.... ;) drag that old 486 out of the closet.... put linux on it and let it dish out IP's... get a little 4 port ethernet hub...

Thats where I started... but then I figure out... ummm, I know NOTHING about linux. Everytime I needed something changed or had a problem I had to get a friend over here to help. So last year, I did what Fig and MrB suggested....

Why the hell would you buy it from Staples?

I bought the one at work "4-port LinkSys" for 99 bucks... from PC warehouse.

$49.95 from CompUSA, I think it's a Belkin though.

- thanks for the advice.

Now, if my ISP would get their heads out of their ACES. I'd have both my PC and my Mac flyin'. I need them to assign me a computer ID number or some jive like that. They better not charge me for 2 hookups, or for the tech support, either....bunch of savages in this town.

Because one of our courthouse's remote offices link went down, and they needed one within 20 minutes...not much choice.

Either way we get to mark it up 25%.

You need a "computer ID" number for what? All you should have to do is config your router with your log-in info then tweak your network settings and you're good to go.
