*nix are the most stable. In my experience, Win2k is much more stable than Win98, and I haven't had any trouble with any of the games I play.

cool, but i notice alot of things for dl/free stuff is either win98 or NT why does it seem (to me anyways) there isn't much of a product line for 2k, or does it not matter which OS the product is for as long as it's lower then 2k? like if it says 98 NT, but since 2k is over 98 it'd be ok. |

It's pretty much a case by case basis. 2k is based off of NT technology, so if it works on NT, the chances are good it will work on 2k. But out of all the software I use, I've never had an trouble with it because I was using Win2k. So I don't think it's that big of a deal unless you play a lot of old dos games or something. At which point you should just buy an old dos machine for $100 instead of trying to make it run on a windows machine.

Half-Life won't run on Win2k because it isn't service pack 3. 98 is.

Stability is caused by constant upkeep....regardless of what platform and or OS you are running. I have Macs and Pcs that have not had a crash/freeze/crazystuff in FOREVER. ( about a year and a half or so in the case of a certain mac ). 98, 2000, NT, XP all are as friendly as you let them be... Frankly, I have a weekly regiment of preventive maintenance that is performed on each machine no matter what its OS may happen to be. |

AHHHH so ANNOYING!!! that blue error screen (system busy or whatever) comes up almost EVERY TIME i open up IE or IE will just freeze comp wil crash blue screen says hit a key to continue, i do that, it freezes. i restart, try internet again, freezes. |

Well if you want the best of both worlds, then just wait until the end of October for Windows XP. I'm running Beta 2 right now, and I love it. No instabilty for 13 days and 7 hours as of right now. And it will play your games if so desire to install them. Windows 2000 doesn't like games because it's not meant for home computers. It doesn't allow the software to access the hardware that most high-end games need. But Windows XP Home does not have that problem. And in the unlikely event there is a problem, you can set Windows XP to Emulate Windows 95, 98, 2K, whatever, so that you can run your old programs and games. |

my friends said win 2k was better cause it's not "loaded with all that crap" with the home versions or whatever ... but i guess to keep the HL investment an investment, i'd have to choose XP... can u post the first sign of instability |
