its time to upgrade my painfully outdated box in the next month or two, and i've been hearing fantastic things about the new athlon 64. looking at possibly putting in an athlon 64 3000, anyone have any firsthand experience and/or have any mainboard recommendations? thanks.

cool, definitely keep me updated, thanks. they're really not too expensive as long as you're not trying to go top-of-the-line (motherboard combos with the athlon 64 3000 starting at $265 on pricewatch).

i'm also looking to get a new hard drive (60 or 80 gig), any thoughts on a good price/performance choice there?

i suppose i could if i really had to, but since i don't see a real need for it i'm looking for "a good price/performance choice"

My friend got a SATA drive for his. And a ATI XGHSDfSDFISF video card. Whatever the fastest one is. I don't keep up with it anymore. He got the 3200 I believe. Got most of it from www.monarchcomputer.com (case, mobo, processor, ram, hard drive) and got the video card, power supply, etc from Newegg. Then he'll put them together when they get here I guess. I'm looking forward to having something to play Half Life 2 on though. Hooray! And maybe if he's lucky, it'll even run Windows Longhorn! *rimshot*

I would get a Maxtor 80gig 8mb cache ata133. Get the 120 if you an afford the upgrade or just spend it on the RAM you will have to buy since you can probably put 4-8 1GB in there =)

I have an Athlon 64-bit 3200+! It's very nice, i definately recommend it over a Xeon or any other processor in it's price range.

As for the motherboard, i use a Gigabyte K8N-Pro.

Nos.
