Ok, I need a final answer on this. What does GIF officially stand for?

I've always known it for the longest time as Graphic Interlace Format. I've actually read this on several sites.

I've been playing a trivia game on IRC, and that's one of the questions, "GIF stands for Graphic ___________ Format."

Well, I argued up and down with the person who wrote the script and he said I was wrong. He then pointed me to a couple of pages that said it stood for Graphic Interchange format, and that's the answer he has programmed in the script.

You can type either into Google, and both come up.

So which is right? If I'm wrong, I don't care, but I don't want to be wrong, for the purpose of having wrong information.

Absolutely, no doubt about it...."Interchange".

And one more thing, while I'm at it. It's a HARD stinkin' "G" as in Gas Bag. I cringe every time I hear somebody say "Jif".

Big fat GIF reference.

Ok, thanks. And yes, I'm one of few I know that actually pronounce it correctly (that much i do know). :D

So I guess all these other sites are just wrong.

Well since as far back as I remember, I've always heard "interchange". But I never put any thought into it. And I'll admit it, I've always called them "jifs" because "Gif" just sounds like I have a hairball stuck against my adams apple.

Here's how my logic works, and I'm sticking to it, no matter what historical references are presented:

Since GIF is an acronym for:

Graphic Interchange Format

and not

Giraffe-ic Interchange Format.

I'll stick with pronouncing the acronym using the letter sounds that would most logically be derived from the root words.
