I don't really understand why every site has to be fixed in 800*600.

It's just the reality of it all. The display statistics say that almost 50% of people out there use 800 by 600 resolution. Generally when you spend a lot of time on something that you want people to see, you want them to see it the way you intended it to be seen. If you don't care, I'd say just do what you want and hope people still enjoy your hard labor no matter how it comes up.

I'm with you though, I hate designing that way.

i use 1280*1024, and like 3jorn said, i hate having non maximized windows. I'd use 1600*1200 if i could except my monitor only runs it at 70Hz so it hurts my eyes ;)

Yes I know...and I do understand the statics too and I know it should be done that way but...
I just mean you just have to think of who your visitors will be.
It's just as bad if you have flash, shockwave, not done it with CSS (Most of the sites can't be viewed with mozilla otherwise).
There are still more people not having the flash plugin installed so people aren't able to see the site at all.
And how many people are using flash on their sites now a days?
I'm at 1152x864 (I'm the only person I know that uses that res), 32bit colors, and maximize everything (well ... maybe not things like AIM that are made to not take up space). I'm that 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% on that chart labeled "Insane/Different."

Thats the res I use too, only cool people do.

I don't like pop-up sites, but not because it doesn't take up my whole window.

I don't like designing sites much wider than 800 anyway... unless you make multiple columns. if text gets too long on one line it gets really hard to read...

I'm using 1152 x 864 also. On a 17" monitor 1024 is too small, but 1280 is too large. I also maximize everything. My boss runs his display at 2048 x whatever, and has every window tiled so he can work on 43 things at once...now that is weird.

YES. Us 1152x864 people are the coolest. :D Exactly what Mattboy said, on Windows XP it makes everything look very big, but 1280 looks to small. My friend (who hardly is ever on his computer) has a 19" monitor, and is running 1024x768.

Joins the 1152x864 group.. For some reason on my "new" 17" monitor, 1024 x 768 looks huge like its 800x600. Anything larger than 1152x864 becomes way too small..

1152*864 here too.
Although it's a 19" monitor, I like this res. If for nothing else, I don't think you can 'relate' to someone having 800*600 when designing something that's supposed to look ok on lower resolutions if you're running 9486489*465465465 four screen TFTOMGmg!1

I actually like designing for 800x600, you can make it look like it's more compact / content rich than to spread some tiny blocks of info on a HUGE screen. :p

1280x1024 on my desktop computer and 1600x1200 on my laptop. I like being able to workin on multiple things at the same time and still have room to see stuff without having to minimize and maximize things all the time. Works good for me :D
