define splash

i know what it is more or less, but someone define it for me

think of it as a prelude image. used anywhere from movies and video games, to programs and web sites. kind of like a reinforcement as to what you are about to see and who made it.

The first page you see here is a splash page:

It's a gateway into the site. usually people use them for important information (such as if you need Flash plugin, redirect because of browser, etc).

Some people simply put a single little image for you to click on, with nothing else, which more or less just waitis a click to get into the site.

I have mixed feelings about them.
