How do those artists do the "special effects" in movies?

Actually its all real, there are no "effects" as such.
You know in Independance Day when that Alien Space ship blew up the Whitehouse?
Well actually there was this Alien Space ship and it really blew up the Whitehouse!

...and Godzilla really crushed New York? Yeah right. Ok some stuff is done using miniatures but lots of stuff is done using a computer too.

Stuff like the Matrix: they use Maya. If you see screenshots of the BulletTime parts of the Matrix, they just use glass circles with their radii in a sine-wave fashion... Hard to make it look real, though.

For the explosions, they probably just blow up a miniature model of the thing somewhere out in the desert...

And no, they didn't blow up the White House, but last time I was in New York, it wasn't pretty ;) .

Some of the coolest effects I've ever seen on film was "Pearl Harbor"

The whole Godzilla movie was a hoax! I crossed the Brooklyn Bridge last week....it's still there!!! When I was in college (second time and I still don't have a degree) , there was a class across the hall from one of mine and they were using the software used in "Titanic"....or so they say. I wish I could remember the name? Could you imagine the price?!
